My daughter is Goldilocks! I don’t know why it took me ten years to realize this, but it did.

Not only does she have golden hair, but she has the audacity as well. Just like her fictional counterpart, she seems to have no regard for other people’s property. What is hers is hers and what is yours is hers too!

She is the baby of the family, number eight in the sibling line up. From the time she was six months old, she somehow weaseled her way into eating my dinner every night. I got in the habit of simply putting more on my plate so that I would have something to eat also. She wears her sisters’ clothes, uses their brushes, and just like Goldilocks, even sleeps in their beds.

I have always questioned the character of the fairy tale Goldilocks. She seemed to take no thought for the owners of the little cottage as she searched for the things that were “just right.” She appears to have been somewhat destructive and quite selfish, but I don’t think that is the reason my daughter behaves as she does.

My daughter seems to be absolutely secure in the fact that she is loved. She has always had seven older siblings and her parents doting on her. She has very little fear and is quite confident. She is also loving and kind and makes friends easily with people of all ages.

In many ways, I think my daughter models how God wants us to feel about our relationship with him. He offers us so many gifts and we simply have to receive them. He holds us securely in his arms so we can dance freely through life. He always, always, loves us no matter what we do or what may happen to us. We don’t need to fear! We really can rest securely in God’s love for us.

I know, a lot easier said than done. I have been personally working on these things for my whole life. Thank goodness God is also patient with us! He will continue to lead us to this place of freedom and security in him, where we can say with Goldilocks, “This is just right!”
“So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in them.” 1 John 4:16
