My friend recently blessed my eight year old daughter by buying her her first pair of Nike shoes. Being eight, she was immediately convinced that these shoes would live up to their marketing and that she would now be able to far out distance her brother in a running race.
I remember back in the day when all the basketball shoes came out, my brother was convinced that he would now be able to jump just as high as Michael Jordan and make incredible shots with the basketball.
Now both of those kinds of shoes may or may not deliver on marketing promises depending on how much training and conditioning the wearer is ready to commit to, however, there is one pair of shoes that does fulfill its promise.
In the book of Ephesians in the Bible, there are some verses that talk about different articles of clothing, or armor actually. Part of the list is, “feet shod with the readiness that comes from the Gospel of peace.” Now I know that is kind of a mouthful, not blatantly slick like, “just do it,” however, there is so much packed into that sentence!
These are the shoes that we as followers of Jesus are to be wearing every day, that is where the readiness part comes in. Are we spending time with Jesus so we are ready for the encounters He brings with others during our day? And then what are we to be ready for when we interact with people?
Well the word “gospel,” actually means good-news, specifically the good news about Jesus. And of course we all desire more peace, whether in our own homes or the world. If we are putting these shoes on each morning, we will be ready, with God’s help, to spread good news and peace wherever we go.
Another great thing about the shoes of peace is that they are free and never wear out! They are included in all the blessings we receive as we choose to become followers of Jesus. So tomorrow as you get dressed, don’t forget to put on your shoes of peace and take some good news into your world.
“How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace.” Isaiah 52:7a
