As I have been hit with the flu this week while another power outage looms, I thought it might be a good time to re-post this blog!
Now that we are into the new school year, most of us mothers are well into planning our fall schedules. I am a planner at heart. I love my calendar and white board. After this many years of parenting, however, I have learned that even the best laid plans or schedules have a way of flying out the window when the daily grind actually becomes a reality.
Things such as colds or little emergencies can derail a beautifully constructed schedule. Sometimes it can even be good things that get in the way, such as a field trip or that first rainy day when we just have to stay in our pajamas and drink tea by the fire. Even though I personally don’t like interruptions, I think God uses them for good in my life to keep me from becoming too rigid and dare I say boring? Although with eight kids I don’t think boring will ever be a concern!
In our spiritual walks we can also get a little caught up in scheduling our times with God. “I am going to spend this amount of time reading the Bible and do this Bible study.” I know I have done this many times over the years. Just like my calendar tends to get interrupted, God has a way of surprising me and interrupting my plans that I think are so wonderful, to show me His best for me that day.
For all of us as we move toward Fall, into another new season, my prayer would be that as we make our plans, we talk to God about them. Ask Him what is His best for us at this time of our lives. And then leave your plans in His hands knowing that whatever happens He is the one holding us and He always has good in store for us.
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12
